How It All Began – The Story Behind Cape Cod Photobus

Every great idea begins with a little spark. For Cape Cod Photobus, that spark started with a lifelong love of photography and vintage Volkswagen vans.

Hi! I’m Mandy, the person behind Cape Cod Photobus. My obsession with VWs actually started years ago when I was in high school. At the time, I dreamed of converting a VW RV into a mobile darkroom and traveling the world taking photographs. That dream planted the seed for what would eventually become this business.

Fast forward a few years and I found myself living in Dresden, Germany. Surrounded by VW culture, my love for these iconic vehicles only grew stronger. On a trip to Portugal, I rented a 1979 campervan named “Saffron,” and that experience completely changed everything. From that moment on, I knew I wanted to build a life and a business centered around these incredible vans.

When I returned to the United States, I started a campervan rental company in Alaska and built a small fleet of Westfalias. It was an amazing adventure—but eventually life brought me to Cape Cod.

And of course, I couldn’t live without a VW.

That’s when I found Samambaia, our beautiful 1972 Volkswagen bus that is now the heart of Cape Cod Photobus. The name means “fern” in Portuguese, a nod to the trip that first inspired my campervan journey.

Today, Samambaia has been transformed into a state-of-the-art mobile photo booth that brings vintage charm and unforgettable fun to events across Cape Cod. When the bus rolls up, people smile instantly. Guests climb inside, grab props, and leave with photo strips and memories they’ll treasure forever.

Cape Cod Photobus isn’t just a photo booth—it’s an experience. And it all started with a dream, a love of photography, and one very special VW bus.
